10/01/12 School of Wellness: Cancer Prevention

School of Wellness, October 2012
By Regina Novak, B.S., M.P.H., Health Educator for Med-Vision

Cancer Prevention through Nutrition and Activity
Abstract: Cancer does not discriminate and can affect anyone. Because there are more than 100 different types of cancer, there is still much you can learn about how to best prevent and treat cancers. Many cancers cannot be explained or attributed to specific factors; however, the medical community has determined that aside from some of the unexplainable or non-modifiable reasons (ex: genetic components) behind cancer development, there are certain modifiable risk factors that exist. For years, tobacco has been the top modifiable risk for cancer, but you can also reduce your risk of cancer through weight control, diet, and physical activity. It is estimated that one-third of the annual cancer deaths can be attributed to tobacco products, while another third is related to poor diet, inactivity, overweight/obesity, or a combination of all three (Kushi, et al, 2012).

While there is still much to be determined in the way of cancer prevention, guidelines from the American Cancer Society (ACS) are based on the potential health benefits of certain behaviors and the potential risks by not adopting these behaviors. Keep in mind that there is no guarantee against cancer because of a healthy lifestyle; this is why it is so important to ask your physician about age appropriate and risk level recommended screenings.....

Age and genetics are not modifiable, but other risk factors are lifestyle choices you make. The most recent findings show evidence that some of the risk factors for heart disease (high cholesterol, diabetes, inactivity, etc) also increase the risk of Alzheimer's and other forms of cognitive decline. Experts recommend that nutrition and exercise should be part of everyone's healthy aging plan....

Hydrate for Good Health
Abstract: Water is an essential nutrient to life and to the overall function of your body. Making up about 60 percent of your total body weight, water is responsible for helping you flush out waste products, carrying nutrients to the cells, regulating body temperature, and lubricating your joints. Without the proper amount of water, your body will not function correctly.

You achieve proper hydration through the consumption of various foods and beverages such as fruits, vegetables, and milk. Milk's main ingredient is water and provides the additional health benefits of calcium and vitamin D. Sports drinks also hydrate and can be better than water when it comes to hydrating endurance athletes and those individuals working in hot or humid climates. Humor Can Help Your Health
Abstract: Have you laughed yet today? If you haven't, stop what you are doing and find a reason to laugh. It may sound like a strange request, but you will be doing yourself a favor. Laughter and humor are actually beneficial to your health. Consider these Physical Benefits of Humor:

- Improves immunity: Laughing decreases stress hormones. Stress suppresses our immune system and our ability to fight infection. Also, laughing boosts overall immunity by increasing levels of immunoglobulin A or IgA and the number of B cells. This helps fight off respiratory infections and helps the body make disease destroying antibodies.

-Promotes relaxation: Laughing releases tension in the body by relaxing the muscles, opening blood vessels, and improving overall circulation. This, in turn, helps lower blood pressure and improves oxygen flow throughout the body.

-Decreases pain levels: Laughing releases endorphins, the body's natural feel good chemical that can relieve pain.

-Complements disease treatment plans: While laughter and humor are not cure-alls for diseases, they can enhance an appropriate disease treatment plan. Laughter has been shown to increase levels of natural killer cells. This is especially helpful in cancer patients because these cells seek to destroy tumors and cancer cells...
